Believe it or not, there's actually a site called Coaches Hot Seat (link: http://www.coacheshotseat.com/). They have a list of names of those who are in jeopardy heading in to 2010; out of that list I've picked my own Fickle Four and I'll tell you why:
(1) Ron Zook, Illinois. In my honest opinion he should have been let go at the end of this past season, but why that didn't happen I still can't figure out. Already the boosters are calling for Zook's head as well as some of the Chicago-area sportswriters and many of the Illini fans. Maybe they're starting to realize Florida fans were right all along when we forewarned them about the Zooker not being an effective gameday strategist and poor clock manager - but they didn't want to listen at first. His poor showing in the 2010 recruiting wars does diddly-squat to help his cause.
(2) Dan Hawkins, Colorado. The last time the Buffs had any inkling of success, it was from the years that Kordell "Slash" Stewart was part of this team. One would have thought that Hawkins, having come from Boise State, would have jumpstarted this team, but they haven't come through and, like Baylor, bring up the bottom of the Big 12.
(3) Rich Rodriguez, Michigan. Already under heat for allegations of breaking the rules regarding length of player practice times, RichRod is heading into a make-or-break year. So what if they beat Notre Dame - they haven't been able to beat archrival Ohio State or get into the post-season in the first two years since he arrived. Apparently the spread isn't working in Ann Arbor, and he needs to figure out a way to win in that conference.
(4) Dennis Erickson, Arizona State. One would think that his coming from a head-coaching job in the NFL would translate to success at the college level, but unfortunately he's fallen into the same trap of mediocrity that Al Groh and Chan Gailey have (Gailey has since returned to the NFL) as coaches who've done the exact same thing. He won in his first year in Tempe but has been sub-par ever since. Sun Devil fans won't stand for very much more of that.
Coaches Hot Seat also has Lane Kiffin on their list, but he'll likely get a "honeymoon" first year at USC - yet after that, he better put his money where his mouth is and get results or else.
OK, let's hear your thoughts.
