Rex Daniel “Sexy Rexy” Grossman was born in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was Indiana’s Mister Football in his senior year. His old high school even retired his jersey the year he brought the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006. Sexy Rexy played quarterback for Steve Spurrier and Ron Zook from 1999 to 2002. He was redshirted his freshman year, and started his tumultuous sophomore year number three behind Jesse Palmer and Brock Berlin. Here we saw the trademark up-and-down play of Rex. In his first start he threw three interceptions against UGA, was benched in favor of Brock Berlin, and then rebounded the next week by throwing for 334 yards and 2 TDs. By his junior year, he had earned the starting position and came in second in a close Heisman Trophy vote while earning 1st-Team All-American and Associated Press National Player of the Year. Sexy Rexy is remembered for the “Slinging in the Rain” game against LSU where he went 22/32 for 464 yards and 5 TDs and won the game. As a junior, Sexy Rexy had a decent year under Ron Zook and the Prevent Offense, but not good enough to pull out a win over the Michigan Wolverines in the Outback Bowl. He finished his career with 9, 164 yards, 77 touchdowns, and a then SEC-best 146.77 passer rating.
