Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s win over Ole Miss

Some observations following UF’s 75-71 win at Ole Miss:

– Good to see UF sophomore guard DeVon Walker taking advantage of increased minutes off the bench. Walker’s seven points off the bench in the first half was important to help the Gators keep up with Ole Miss guard Marshall Henderson and the high-scoring Rebels in the first 20 minutes. Walker went 2 of 6 from 3-point range and is 4 of 9 from 3-point range (44.4 percent) over his last two games.

– On the subject of Walkers, Florida freshman McDonald’s All-American forward Chris Walker still looks lost at times. As Florida coach Billy Donovan has said, Walker is still thinking instead of reacting, which at this point negates his athleticism. Walker had a nice hook shoot for 2 points in 6 minutes off the bench, but also missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw attempt late in the first half.

– Florida’s defense slipped this week, but the Gators didn’t help themselves at that end with some loud turnovers. Ole Miss scored 14 points off 14 UF turnovers. Senior point guard Scottie Wilbekin came up with some big shots and big passes during the course of the game, but was sloppy at times with 5 turnovers.
