Bobby Johnson stepping down at Vanderbilt

One of the classiest guys you're ever going to meet in college sports is stepping down.

Vanderbilt has called a 2 p.m. ET press conference Wednesday to announce that Bobby Johnson is stepping down as head football coach and to discuss where the Commodores go from here. It sounds like Johnson's resignation will be immediate and that he won't coach this season.

Here's the ESPN.com news story on the sudden turn of events (also link in the blog article): http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/11853/johnson-stepping-down-at-vanderbilt

Uh, I don't know what the 'Dores do from here. 2 months till the season starts and no head coach.

Two of my fellow bloggers (Year2 at Team Speed Kills and The Bull Gator) made a good suggestion for a successor to Bobby Johnson that I also agree with: current Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, who comes from Paul Johnson's (Georgia Tech's head coach) coaching tree.

Other boards are suggesting Mike Leach but IMO he carries too much baggage, especially after the TexasTech episode.

The only problem I see with that is you bring in the Paul Johnson/Ken Niumatalolo option attack which I don't know how well the players would react to that..... Just a thought.

People were saying the same thing about the spread-option attack of Urban Meyer back in 2005 in that it would never work in the SEC - and they were proven wrong. Though our guys were used to Zook's shotgun-draw and bubble-screen offense, Meyer found a way to make it work. Any smart coach adapts his scheme around the level of talent he has on his roster.

UF's talent >>>>>>> than Vandy's talent.

People also said the same thing about Spurrier's offense when he came in 1990.
