Brewer hosting camp in Gainesville again

Former Gator standout forward Corey Brewer, a key member of UF’s back-to-back national title teams in 2006 and 2007, will be returning to Gainesville to hold his sixth annual Fight Diabetes Back 2 Back youth basketball camp.

The camp will be held at Buchholz High from Aug. 3-5 and will include instruction from the Houston Rockets forward.

“I am looking forward to another great camp in Gainesville working with the kid as well as raising funds for diabetes care and research,” Brewer said. “I have truly enjoyed hosting this camp every year and getting to see the kids improve. I feel fortunate that I can give back to the community that has given so much to me.”

To date, Brewer’s camp has raised more than $25,000 for the UF Diabetes Institute at Shands. The camp is open to kids ages 9 to 18. Those interested in signing up or who want more information on the camp can visit www.coreybrewer.com, email [email protected] or call 310-786-0389.

After being traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this season, Brewer helped lead the Rockets to the Western Conference finals, averaging 11.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

Other notes:

– Former Gator guard Eli Carter is taking an official visit to Georgetown this weekend, according to a CBSSports.com report. Carter hasn’t ruled out at least asking to return to the Gators and will need to finish summer courses at UF to graduate and gain the graduate exemption transfer to play immediately next season.

– Former Gator walk-on forward Jacob Kurtz was named the winner of the Lt. Fred Koss Award during the 2015 season, given to the senior basketball player who has personified the attributes of leadership, personal character, scholarship and competitive excellence. Kurtz, by the way, has begun his foray into coaching by joining former Gator assistant coach Matt McCall’s staff at UT-Chattanooga as video coordinator.

– Three former Gators will be suiting up for the NBA Finals Game 1 tonight — forward Mike Miller (Cleveland Cavaliers), forward David Lee (Golden State Warriors) and forward/center Marreese Speights (Golden State Warriors). None of the three have played significant minutes in the NBA Playoffs, but Speights could get some action off the bench in the NBA Finals after sitting out the previous two series with a calf injury. Regardless, it will mark another season in which a former Gator player will take home an NBA championship ring. Matt Bonner (Spurs, 2014), Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem (Heat 2013 and 2012) and Brewer (Dallas Mavericks, 2011) are former Gators that have been on title-winning teams in recent seasons.
