BYU is not just Jimmer, Muschamp wants fit Gators and Urban Meyer to Ohio State

travisduncan

Gator Fan
Jimmer Fredette is the catalyst of the BYU Cougars and he can easily put up between 30 and 40 points.

But the Cougars are averaging 81.6 points per game, sixth in Division-1, while Jimmer is at 28.8 ppg, on the season.

Some keys to stopping BYU:

Control the momentum with out limiting your own offense

Dave Rose and BYU would like nothing more than to make this an up and down, frenetic type of game, where the Gators both lose their composure and the game.

Getting good shots and controlling the paint will help slow the game down and limit what BYU can do.

But the Gators don't want to slow it down to the point where they aren't attacking and utilizing their multiple scoring threats.

Controlling the paint

The Cougars go with three guards (Fredette, Emery, Collinsworth) and two forwards. 6-foot-5 forward Charles Abouo and 6-foot-8 forward Noah Hartstock.

Alex Tyus goes at 6-foot-8, Chandler Parsons and Vernon Macklin are 6-foot-10.

BYU is a solid rebounding team, but they haven't faced the size of Florida much this year. When they lost to UCLA back on Dec. 18, the Bruins presented that size, and three front-court Bruins combined for 55 points.

Limit Foul Trouble

That being said, the Gators don't want to get any of the big guys in foul trouble early. They can still win the game, but it would require heroics by Erving and or Boynton.

Make Free Throws

Seniors can miss free-throws in crunch time just as well as a sophomore can, so I really don't thin Florida's experience per se will help them in this department. Florida fans pray that the Gators can knock down shots should it come to that late.

BYU makes 84.6% of its free-throws (4th in Division-1) Florida makes 76.5%, (39th in Division-1.)

Let Jimmer get his, stop everyone else

Typically you try to stop the best player, but over emphasis on stopping the Jimmer will allow BYU to do exactly what they do-make it appear that Jimmer is beating you when in reality 40 points from the rest of the team is ultimately what stops you.

But sometimes when the game is tight late, game plans are thrown out the window. And if it comes to that, you will have to find a way to stop Jimmer in order to win the game.

In last's year's opening-round double-overtime loss, early the Gators didn't double-team Jimmer. He won the game late with two three-pointers in the second overtime period.

Here's what coach Donovan said on the matter:

"He's got the ability to put the ball in the basket in a lot of different ways: runners, off balance shots, fade aways, post-up, drives to the basket, deep, deep threes. He has a knack for putting the ball in the basket, and he can do it at a very, very high level."

"But with all that being said with him, there again, they're getting over 80 points a game. Eighty points a game would lead the SEC in scoring, and it's because of the other guys around him, and that's what makes them such a great team is you may look at the scoring differential, but in a lot of ways they're balanced. "

"He's a terrific passer. He's the kind of guy that can get eight, nine, ten assists in a game because he's playing with good players, he can get Hartsock, he can get Emery wide open shots, and when those guys are open they make shots. Same thing with Abouo, those guys make shots. Rogers comes in they make shots, and a lot of times you get caught watching him on helping on him and he gets those other guys great looks."

Parsons added, "The game plan isn't just to stop Jimmer. They've got a complete team."

It will be interesting to see what type of match-up, zone or double team they use against Jimmer.

Florida has never beaten BYU in three all-time meetings...There's a first time for everything.

In Shape

Will Muschamp said this week that every player on the roster has a prescribed weight to meet.

"We have a very fit football team right now. We have very few guys that have weight issues as far as being overweight. You can probably count them on one hand."

On John Brantley, Muschamp said that he is already ahead of the other guys because of his experience.

-I don't think the idea that Urban Meyer winds up at Ohio State is that far-fetched. But the Jim Tressel situation to Bruce Pearl is different.

Tressel wasn't upfront and neither was Pearl. But this wasn't the first time Pearl had trouble with the NCAA. He also had two secondary violations at Division-II Southern Indiana.

Secondly, Jim Tressel has a National Championship and one of the Top 5 programs in the country. It could take some serious hits, but a coaching change could seriously derail a program for a number of years and Ohio State football means more to the school than men's basketball means to Tennessee.

Also the Ohio State administration has been much more forceful in its support of Tressel. I also think Tressel is a little bit more stable than ol' Bruce and probably will make the best of his second chance if that's what you want to call it.

The NCAA isn't going to go after Ohio State as hard as they will Tennessee because the later has multiple violations in multiple sports which are included in its case. Ohio State will get some sanctions but ultimately it won't hurt Ohio State to keep Tressel.

Things can change quite quickly in college football these days. And I do think that if Ohio State was given a choice right now, get rid of Jim Tressel and you can get Urban Meyer in here tomorrow, they would think long and hard about it.

But Tressel is going to get a second chance and I think he'll make the most of it. I don't think he would resign under pressure. Meyer will get his chance to return to a big time program if he wants to, it's just a matter of when.
