Dan Quinn turns down the pros; Gators could add offensive guard

travisduncan

Gator Fan
Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn turned down an opportunity to take the same job with the Tampa Buccaneers under newly appointed head coach Greg Schiano.

Quinn, who worked with Will Muschamp on the defensive staff of the Miami Dolphins under head coach Nick Saban, interviewed with the Bucs but that is as far as it went according to the Gainesville Sun.

Remarkably, despite a 7-6 record, the Gators finished the 2011 season ranked No. 8 in FBS in total defense and No. 7 in passing defense, while finishing an unremarkable 40th in rushing defense.

Quinn appears to be the man for the job, and Gator nation should be pleased he is staying the course.

-After signing 23 recruits to the 2012 class, the Gators could add another player. 2012 JUCO offensive guard Fehoko Fanaika out of San Mateo (CA) college will make his official visit to the Gators next week.

Fanaika is 6-foot-6 340 lbs so its not hard to imagine why the Gators wouldn't mind having him upfront against the size the Gators see in the SEC on the line of scrimmage.

It's no secret the line of scrimmage is Mushcamp's key objective when it comes to building his roster.

"Of the 23 players that joined our program today, 14 are line-of-scrimmage players, mid skill
and big skill guys," Muschamp said on National Signing Day.

"We saw very easily in our season this year, we struggled on both lines of scrimmage, consistently being able to run the ball and stop the run. I certainly feel like we've addressed our most pressing need, was on both lines of scrimmage, developed play makers and depth on both lines of scrimmage."

Fanaika also has offers from the University of Hawaii, Kansas and Utah State.

To see just how physically big Fanaika is, take a look at this photo of him next to former Gators offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.

-The Gators finished 4th in ESPN's Team recruiting rankings for the 2012 class.

1. Alabama
2. Florida State
3. Texas
4. Florida
5. Georgia
6. Ohio State
7. Michigan
8. Miami (FL)
9. Clemson
10. Notre Dame

The Gators finished third in Rivals final rankings behind Alabama and Texas. Special teams and linebackers coach D.J. Durkin was named Rivals National Recruiter of the Year.

-The No. 7 ranked Gators men's basketball game will play arguably their biggest game of the season Tuesday night at Rupp Arena in Lexington against the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats. The game tips at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Wildcats have won 48 games in a row at home and are currently on a 15-game winning streak. The Gators have won seven straight games.

"I don’t think there’s one thing you can say, ‘If we do this, you put yourself in a better position to win.’" Florida coach Billy Donovan said this week via CBS Sports.

"You have to play well. You have to perform. You have to eliminate mistakes, turnovers, bad shots. You have to rebound. You have to defend."

"Pleased" is putting it mildly...I was concerned when this came up, 'cause you KNOW they offered him $$$; that Dan Quinn, as you say a great fit here, working closely with our D-minded Head Coach to build and mold a defense that is only going to get better--and it's already ahead of schedule--chose to do what our Coach and staff have themselves preached: stay together, see it through, reach for something special, something bigger than any one person...of course, it speaks well of the chemistry among this group, and the support of an AD who's got their backs and who makes sure his people are taken care of, but the important result is continuity, something we haven't had a lot of here for some years. Great coaches , staying together and able to look players and recruits in the eye without blinking when they ask THEM to come in, commit and "buy into the future", has a value you can't put a price-tag on.
