GAINESVILLE — "Whether it was just one drop or an ongoing liability, Florida junior Deonte Thompson hopes to shed his reputation of being a receiver who cannot receive.
Since the day he signed with the Gators out of Glades Central, Thompson has been hyped as their next great downfield weapon, but his inconsistency and Florida's talented upperclassmen kept him quiet. The most noise Thompson made so far was when he called John Brantley a "real quarterback" during spring practice, a misguided attempt to praise Brantley that instead got twisted into an apparent knock on Tim Tebow.
Florida's top two receivers from last season are gone, along with tight end Aaron Hernandez and his team-high 68 catches for 850 yards, clearing the way for Thompson to prove he is a legitimate No. 1 option. That process begins in Saturday's opener against Miami (Ohio)."
