Ingle Martin still considers himself a Florida Gator.
And he's glad to be back in the Sunshine State, even if it is just for seven weeks.
Martin signed this week with the United Football League's New York Sentinels, who will be calling Orlando home for this first season (home games will be played in New York and Hartford, Conn.).
"We still got cuts to make and you never know what's going to happen," said the former
Gators' quarterback. "But it's a good opportunity. I was just at home and I could have waited around for some calls and whatnot, but to come down here for 6-8 weeks gives you a chance to stay sharp and pick up some film."
Martin has bounced around the
NFL since being drafted by the
Green Bay Packers in the fifth round in 2006 out of Furman.
Oh that's right, we must not forget about Furman. Had it not been for Martin's transfer to the South Carolina school in 2004, he may not have secured that draft position.
Martin came to Florida as a Steve Spurrier recruit.
"That's what got me down here. He called me his Tennessee quarterback. He never recruited a quarterback from Tennessee," Martin, a Nashville native, said of Spurrier.
But things didn't quite work out at Florida. Spurrier left after the 2001 season, and Martin served as
Rex Grossman's backup in 2002 under new coach Ron Zook.
