UF statistics professors Sam Wu and James Tan created what they call an “embedded playoff system” that is a kind of hybrid solution that they believe would satisfy people on both sides of the BCS-Playoff debate.
“Even though we won, still there are people out there that doubt the Gators’ championship, so we want a system so that it’s convincing,” said Wu, 42. “We want to settle it on the field, and with the current system, you cannot avoid (controversy) because there are always teams that feel they deserve it.”
But Wu does not propose a straight playoff format. Instead, his EPS system would determine a champion on the field, while also maintaining the BCS format, the traditional bowls and the current 12-to-14 game schedule.
