We made it! After a heart wrenching loss to Alabama in the 2009 SEC Championship Game and a long summer which saw the departure of some of Florida's best football players we have finally made it to the start of Fall Football Practice. Urban Meyer kicks off his sixth season as the Gators Head Coach as the players put on the pads and start preseason camp eager to make it back to a BCS Championship Game. It's a new era in Florida Gator football and I'm excited to see what's in store for us in 2010.
"There's a little bit of newness and freshness in Gainesville right now with the loss of some great players," Meyer said. "But I think we have some great players coming up through the ranks. There's an air of excitement in Gainesville, and justifiably so."
For the first time in three years the Gators will have a new starting quarterback, John Brantley. He begins a new era in Gator football and has quite an act to follow.
"If he was a freshman or sophomore, we'd give a lot of thought to that," Meyer said of the fourth-year junior from Ocala. "We have a real clear understanding of what John Brantley can do. It's the guys around him. We have a lot of talent.
Something new this year at Gator's training camp - all practices are closed to the public and media. This wasn't always the case. You used to be able to go out there and watch the Gators practice and run drills. Meyer is running a tight ship though and wants to keep the Gators focused and the team's new weapons a surprise.
Here's a list of some of the top things to look for in preseason camp:
1. How will Brantley adjust to the spotlight?
2. Who will step us at the #1 WR?
3. How will the defensive line perform without Dunlap and Cunningham?
The Gators open the season Sept. 4 in The Swamp against Miami of Ohio.
