The rest of the story......The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given $1.5 million to University of Florida researchers to develop tools to fight malaria.
It's the first time the foundation has given a direct grant to the university.
While malaria has been effectively controlled in some countries, the disease continues to kill as many as a million people each year in sub-Saharan Africa and other less economically developed regions. The research will develop mathematical models to map the spread of malaria and the effectiveness of efforts to prevent ongoing transmission.
"What we're doing is coming up with a mathematical recipe to determine how much manpower is really required" to control the disease, said David Smith, an associate professor of zoology and associate director of disease ecology at UF's Emerging Pathogens Institute. Smith will lead the research.
