Gators Defeat Vols 31-17

The Florida Gators won their sixth straight over SEC East rival Tennessee on Saturday by a final score of 31-17. Florida moved up to No. 9 in the AP Poll and No. 8 in the Coaches poll after the win. The Gators did not do much offensively during the first half (again) - the score was 7-3 going into halftime... but we put up 24 points in the second half to seal the victory.

Redshirt junior John Brantley was 14-for-23 for 167 yards, with one touchdown and zero interceptions. He wasn't spectacular by any means, but he got the job done. The Gators were more determined to run the ball on Tennessee. Demps had 26 carries for 73 yards (that'll kill his ypc average), Gillislee had 8 carries for 27 yards (and two touchdowns), Moody had 5 carries for 20 yards and Trey Burton had 2 carries for 4 yards (and one touchdown). I was also please to see Pouncey only snap one ball into the ground - it's improvement, people!

The Defense played like they have all year, with the exception of one play where Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms connected with a wide open Denarius Moore just sitting in the endzone for a 49 yard touchdown. The Gators blew the coverage on that play - no safety rolled over to pick him up. Thankfully the Gators responded on their next posession with a Frankie Hammond Jr. touchdown. The defense had 6 sacks, picked Simms off twice and forced a fumble in the fourth quarter

Here are some more game notes:

- Three Gators saw their first action of the season on the opening kickoff: Dee Finley, Frankie Hammond, Jr.
and Will Hill.
- Junior Jeff Demps returned a first-quarter kickoff 43 yards, his third kick return of over 40 yards this season.
- Sophomore Mike Gillislee scored his second touchdown of the season from two yards out to put the Gators on
the board at the beginning of the second quarter. He now has more rushing touchdowns than all of last season.
- Sophomore Jonathan Bostic stopped a potential Tennessee scoring drive in the end zone with his second
interception of the year. Florida now has 10 picks through three games.
- Opponents have reached the red zone eight times against the Gators this season and have scored just two
touchdowns.
- True freshman Ronald Powell collected his first career sack in the second quarter.
- Junior Caleb Sturgis connected on a season-high 44-yard field goal in the third quarter, eclipsing his previous
best of 22 yards against USF.
- Florida improved to 8-for-8 on fake punts under Meyer when redshirt sophomore Omarius Hines ran for 36
yards and a first down in the third quarter. It was the Gators’ first fake punt since Oct. 4, 2008, at Arkansas,
when Brandon James had a 10-yard run.
- Redshirt sophomore Frankie Hammond Jr.’s first reception of the campaign was a seven-yard scoring toss
from Brantley and the successful extra point gave the Gators a 17-10 lead. It was his second career touchdown,
first since last season against FIU.
- Redshirt sophomore Jeremy Brown registered his second interception of the season late in the third quarter,
giving the Gators multiple interceptions in all three games this year (4 vs. Miami University and USF, 2 against
Tennessee). He also had one in the season opener against Miami University.
- Gillislee scored his second touchdown of the day from three yards out late in the third quarter to give UF a 24-
10 lead.
- Florida has now scored 55 points this season on opponent turnovers – eight touchdowns. The Gators have a
55-10 advantage in points off turnovers this year.
- Demps carried a career-high 26 times for 73 yards. His previous high for attempts was 16 against LSU last
season.
- True freshman Trey Burton scored his second rushing touchdown of the year in the fourth quarter after the
Vols had trimmed the deficit to 24-17.
- True freshman Matt Elam recovered his first career fumble in the fourth quarter that was forced by junior Will
Hill.
