The Gators have added two new commitments for the Class of 2012.
Bryan Cox Jr, a 6-foot-3 defensive end out of Ft. Lauderdale committed on Saturday and Alex McCalister a 6-foot-7 defensive end out of Clemmons, North Carolina committed on Monday.
Cox shares the name of his father, NFL great Bryan Cox, who was known for his off the charts talent at linebacker and his temperamental personality with Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Chicago Bears. Cox Sr. is currently an assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins for the time being.
McCalister is a tall lean player at 6-foot-7 and will surely benefit from the Gators offseason conditioning program. At Florida he'll play the Buck position, somewhere between a linebacker and a defensive lineman. McCalister was not highly recruited by the SEC (Georgia and South Carolina did make offers), the biggest offer he received among the powerhouses was from Notre Dame.
The Gators now have seven defensive line commitments for the 2012 class.
-The Gators were not thought to be interested in a quarterback for the 2012 class, but that has changed since the hiring of new offensive coordinator Brent Pease. Pease has been actively recruiting Paxton Lynch out of the Trinity Christian Academy in Deltona, Florida.
According to the Palm Beach Post Lynch will make a visit to the Gators campus this Friday.
Lynch has not been highly recruited by the SEC or other major college football powers. The 6-foot-5 high school senior has just one offer, from Florida A&M.
-Another quarterback the Gators could get a commitment from is Skyler Mornhinweg who is also being recruiting by Pease. Mornhinweg is officially committed to Penn State but visited the UF campus this weekend. Pease and Mornhinweg's dad, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, have known each other for some time.
Virginia Tech is also in the hunt for Morhinweg.
-Freshman defensive tackle Leon Orr will receive deferred prosecution stemming froma an arrest earlier this month for marijuana possession according to The Tampa Bay Times.
A university police officer found less than 20 grams of marijuana and paraphernalia on Jan. 10 during a search of his dorm room.
Muschamp will no doubt keep this internal. But rest assured, the last thing the second-year coach wants is a football program who lives up to its reputation as he tries to change its identity.
-The Gators men's basketball team is ranked No. 14 in the newly released AP Poll on Monday. They also moved up one spot in the Coaches' poll to No. 13. The Gators travel to Ole Miss on Thursday night and host a 16th-ranked Mississippi State team on Saturday.
