The Florida football team formally adopted the nickname of the Gators in 1911, and this is the only season the Gators never lost a game. The Gators were 5-0-1 in 1911 under third-year coach George Pyle. The "Alligators" tied the South Carolina Gamecocks 6-6 at Davis Field and finished second among independent teams, behind the 8-0-0 Oklahoma Sooners.
