GAINESVILLE — "John Brantley knows he's no Tim Tebow.
Tebow was the Gators' fiery leader, trucking over linebackers en route to two national championships and a Heisman Trophy while enhancing his huge popularity through charitable work off the field.
Brantley knows that trying to replicate Tebow would be hopeless.
"He was a great vocal leader. He knew how to take over the team when stuff went bad. I'm not like that," Brantley said. "I know I'm not him. I'm just going to go out there and do my own thing."
That starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium when the Gators hold their annual Orange and Blue spring game. Gator Nation will get its first glimpse of Life After Tebow when Brantley, a fourth-year junior, squares off against true freshman Trey Burton, an early-enrollee from Venice High near Sarasota.
"It's been a long time waiting," said Brantley, the 2006 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year who sat behind Tebow for three seasons. "It means that I'm taking the reins now I guess, get to drive that ship a little bit, become more of a leader."
