History says Wright likely will be Major contributor

"No team in the NFL has swapped out players at the position like the Bears have done, making no fewer than 37 changes among 11 different players over the last five years. In each of the last five drafts, the Bears have invested a draft choice at the position.

Make that six years in a row after Florida's junior-eligible Major Wright was selected 75th overall Friday night in the third round -- the Bears' first pick of the draft after they gave away their first-round pick in the Jay Cutler trade and a second-rounder in the Gaines Adams deal.

Wright was the man the Bears were hoping for, but there was more a sigh of relief than the traditional hugs and high-fives as four other players went off the board before him -- leaving Wright alone as a guy the Bears wanted in the third round. Bears coach Lovie Smith was reluctant to call Wright an immediate starter, but did concede: ''Just look at our history a little bit; he's our first draft pick coming in this year, [and] we are expecting big things from him. I think it is safe to say that.''

CHICAGO — "Ever since Major Wright was the second-ranked high school safety in the country at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Morgan Burnett was the seventh-ranked safety while playing for North Clayton in College Park, Ga., they have been jockeying for position.

At the time, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Miami, among others, were recruiting Wright. Alabama, South Carolina and Georgia Tech were after Burnett. And Florida recruited both players — Wright as its first choice and Burnett as its second.

Wright chose Florida, and Burnett went to Georgia Tech.

Five teams the Tribune contacted all rated Burnett higher than Wright. One had Burnett rated as a second-round pick and Wright a fifth-rounder, but most had them much closer.

The Bears are not unhappy they wound up with Wright. Had they thought Burnett was significantly better, they would have attempted a trade up to the top of the third round."
