Parker (Ala.) High School basketball coach Maurice Ford played it straight Tuesday on why his coveted point guard, Eric Bledsoe, balked on the Florida Gators as quickly as he expressed interest. "He changed his mind," Ford told the Sentinel when reached by phone. "He's allowed to do that. He just wanted to go to Memphis or Kentucky. He wanted to be closer to home."
The distance from Birmingham to Gainesville didn't seem to bother Bledsoe in mid April, when he considered the Gators his clear-cut favorite in the recruiting process. Bledsoe is holding a press conference tomorrow to reveal the winner of his services, either Memphis or Kentucky.
"Florida is recruiting me hard and I like all the coaches," Bledsoe told the Louisville Courier-Journal back in April. With Nick Calathes having one foot out the door and the Gators in desperate need of point guard insurance, Bledsoe seemed destined for the Gators.
Now the Gators could enter the 2009-10 season without a true point guard taller than 5-foot-8 (Erving Walker). Translation: Missing out on Bledsoe is a colossal loss if John Wall doesn't magically fall in Billy Donovan's lap.
Ford dodged any questions on whether Calathes or Wall or Florida's future plans factored into Bledsoe's decision, saying "I'm not getting into that."
