University of Florida running back Jeff Demps (2) ICON Sports Media
The rumor is that Jeff Demps will forgo his senior season at Florida to pursue a professional track campaign and or train for the 2012 Olympics.
It's false.
It would stand to reason getting bruised and beaten by the best collegiate football players in the nation for about 10 weeks is not the standard training regiment for a world class sprinter, who is training for perhaps his only shot at Olympic glory.
Florida or Demps is yet to comment publicly on this but from all available information, it's just a rumor and nothing more. Those close to Demps say there is nothing to it.
Thus far, Will Muschamp has been uber-supportive of Demps' track efforts, but a loss of the senior running back would be a major blow to both offensive productions and leadership.
In 2010, he led the team in rushing yards, carries, yards per game and all-purpose yards.
Another somewhat humorous facet to the rumor, is that some allege Muschamp told Demps' "it's the Gators or the Olympics"-which doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, because an Olympic training regiment should only increase Demps' ability on the field for Muschamp and he is one of the most valuable players on the roster.
According to multiple reports the whole thing is just a silly internet rumor, generated to pass time during the final weeks before the beginning of fall practice and college football begins.
Demps is currently training with Team USA overseas.
-This Friday Night will mark yet another edition of Friday Night Lights at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, and the first under Muschamp. Several 2012 commitments are expected to attend the one-night summer camp which hosts the best high school players across the country. A handful of other Gator recruits and targets will be attending with the hopes they will leave Gainesville giving their verbal commitment to the Gators.
-The SEC Media Days begin in Hoover, Alabama on Wednesday. Representing the Gators will be Muschamp, QB John Brantley, DE William Green and WR Deonte Thompson, who will be speaking with the media Wednesday afternoon.
