Jelani Jenkins is ready for the starting linebacker position. Brandon Spikes and Brandon Stamper are gone - Brandon Hicks and A.J. Jones are slotted for the two outside linebacker spots. That leaves the middle open for competition and it seems like Jelani is primed to take that spot. We have a video of Jelani talking about what he learned in 2009, what is expected of him in 2010 and how he plans to play linebacker.
Jenkins came to UF as a small guy (as far as linebackers are concerned). He was 208 last year, but spent the offseason bulking up and is at about 225 now. He has the speed of a safety but can hit like a d-lineman. He's anxious to play but knows that he is still young and won't be given a 100% starting gig right away.
"However this linebacking position plays out, it's not just going to be three people," Jenkins said. "We're going to be rotating. Me and Bostic, even in practice, we take a lot of reps together, both on the field at the same time.
"However it plays out, we're both just trying to get better, trying to root for each other, trying to give each other healthy competition. If he makes a big play, then I know that I have to a big play and we both just do it all for each other."
