"Florida is coming off a 23-20 win against Arkansas last week in which the Gators turned the ball over four times and quarterback Tim Tebow was sacked six times but somehow pulled it out with two fourth-quarter drives.
In the locker room afterward, Meyer said, the defense "was crushed'' by the way it played.
At what point does the pressure, much of it self-inflicted, become too much? That's why Meyer decided it's time to step in and ease off just a bit because those monster expectations could be a reason the Gators didn't look – or play – so well last week.
"I see guys just pressing, and I feel it around the office,'' Meyer said."We want to play perfect because the expectation level is to play at an extremely high level. That's what I see. But that's what's great about where we're at. I've been at places before the expectation level is to try to get a first down – don't worry about leading the SEC in offense, let's just try to move the ball.''
Great in one sense but perhaps bad in another. Maybe Florida is too hard on itself for its own good?
"I guess one of my jobs is to make sure and try to preach that to them constantly: You don't have to be perfect, you have to be the better team on the field that day,'' he said."
