Without Chandler Parsons, Florida did not have a problem winning their 21st game of the season against LSU Sunday afternoon. It was the first win for UF basketball at LSU since 2003.
One interesting note from the game is that LSU decided not to double team Vernon Macklin inside and, and they paid the price early. He eventually scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. It will depend on matchups, but it will be curious to see how opponents in the NCAA tournament defend Macklin and on the flip side how well Macklin can pass out of the double team.
Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker scored 17 points each to lead the Gators. That's a good sign. If they can get production from the big three and then Parsons when he is healthy they should be very competitive come tournament time.
Billy Donovan didn't have an exact timeline for Parsons who missed the game with a thigh bruise. But it doesn't sound like he'll play Tuesday night against Georgia though Saturday against Kentucky doesn't sound out of the question.
Parsons tweeted a photo of his bruise on Twitter over the weekend.
One of the other big questions about Florida is how reliant can they be or will they be on their bench. In Sunday's win Scottie Wilbekin played 30 minutes, while Patric Young got 18 minutes.
The Orange and Blue actually only shot 26-percent in the second half (6-of-23) but made 14 of 18 free-throws.
At this point I still see Florida winning at least 3 of their last 4 games and a couple of games if not the entire SEC Tournament, and ultimately earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.
When the polls come out later today, expect to see the Gators in the 10-13 range.
Up next is Georgia Tuesday night, then the Wildcats in Lexington at 4 pm ET on CBS next Saturday.
Remaining Schedule:
02/24 UGA 7:00pm
02/26 @UK 4:00pm
03/01 ALA 7:00pm
03/05 @VAN 6:00pm
SEC Tournament in Atlanta, March 10-13.
-The Orlando Sentinel reports Freshman linebacker Neiron Ball was released from the hospital after a blood vessel burst in his brain last week. He has already been ruled out for Spring Practice.
-Will Muschamp added a couple of commitments this past weekend to the 2012 class, receiving the verbal from linebacker Jeremi Powell out of Pinellas Park high school in Largo, Fla. It's apparent Muschamp is thinking defense first in terms of his early recruiting for the 2012 class.
The Gators also added the verbal from running back Mike Davis out of Stephenson high school in Stone Mountain Georgia. Davis is being compared to former Stephenson and UGA back Kregg Lumpkin who now is with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Davis' coach at Stephenson Ron Gartrell told ESPN, “Mike Davis is right there with Kregg Lumpkin."
"It's funny because I have this same conversation with my coaches all the time. Who's better, Kregg or Mike? I tell you, Mike is not far off. Kregg could do it all. He had speed, power and can catch. Mike has those things too and is very talented"
