Meyer: Tebow runs too early

GAINESVILLE - "No one is coming out and saying it, but the reality in the Gators' locker room is that Tim Tebow isn't playing so hot.

Coach Urban Meyer referred to that fact at Monday's press conference, saying the Florida quarterback is "not playing at his highest level." This might be Meyer's first open acknowledgment of Tebow's struggles, as Tebow's never really struggled scoring before.

Meyer said "there's a chance" Tebow has been pressing entering Saturday's rivalry game with Georgia in Jacksonville but added that the coaches aren't maximizing his talents in the red zone.

"I don't put it on Tim," Meyer said. "I put it on the surrounding cast."

Florida has moved the ball downfield in recent weeks but has just two touchdowns in 15 trips to the red zone in the past three games.

Meyer said Tebow, despite his immense talent and toughness getting first downs, often takes off too early to run on designed passing plays."

Well, now that someone has said something, let's hope he changes.

I still think the concussion is having an effect on him.

Maybe he runs too early because the pocket is collapsing? Hmmm...

It seems like yes, Tebow might run before checking down his receivers, but I think it's all hindsight. When the pocket collapses or the blitz gets to Tebow, it's like Tebow doesn't know when to get rid of the ball. But when Tebow quickly looks down field then tucks the ball and runs, Tebow's running too quickly.

I refuse to believe it has nothing to do with playcalling. I haven't been as upset with our playcalling as many other UF fans, but I'm pretty sure we haven't called the perfect play every time we have been in the redzone. I think Tebow's first pick 6 against MSU was a good example of this.

it seems to me that we keep drives alive when tebow starts scrambling out of the pocket....i really dont understand whats going on with the passing game, and i wont unless i can see game film....i just dont know what to say about the offense...

Quoted for truth! If Timmy didn't run, he'd probably be the most sacked QB in the conference, if not in NCAA. His concussion was an indicator of the need for a better offensive line, and better play calling if we don't block defenders. I am surprised the dive play works with that offensive line blocking.

I agree, until I see the game film myself, I am just making educated guesses as to our problems.

Honestly, I think it's a combination of many things that's leading to our offensive woes.

1. No more Pervin and Murphy

2. Offensive line not as good as last year

3. Receivers not stepping up like we hoped

4. Injuries to our WRs (Duboise and Moore)

5. Better defensive playcalling by our opponents which is confusing Tebow

6. Loeffler (sp?) and Meyer possibly confusing Tebow: The coaching staff was hoping Tebow would pass the ball from the pocket more, but this forces Tebow to think and try to do too much on passing plays. Normally, his running instinct would take over and things would work out, but he keeps looking down field when last year he wouldn't have. But then a big sack sticks in his mind, so a few plays later Tebow tries to "compensate" by running sooner than he should have to prevent what happened a few plays before.

7. Not as good playcalling (I think our playcalling is still ok, but I see some room for improvement...or maybe that's just my selective memory...)

That's it in a nutshell; when Tebow has no protection in the pocket, his productivity plummets.
