Muschamp finally speaks his mind

We've been waiting for this since last winter.

We've got about one week before the first game of the season and the real Will Muschamp, Coach Boom, as it were, has emerged.

Far removed from the script of his spring speaking tour, Wednesday evening Mushcamp really let us know what he thought about his team, albeit referring exclusive to the night's scrimmage.

Here's what the coach had to say about Wednesday's effort in particular.

"We had no sense of urgency of what we're doing and how we do it and how we approach it. And it's not everybody. We've got a bunch of guys that do it the right way but not enough and not collectively enough guys doing it that way at this point."

"As far as the scrimmage was concerned we did not execute very well. The mental toughness was not there..very immature football team. At this point, not consistently performing at the level we need to perform at. Just disappointed overall with the mental effort tonight. Some procedure issues we should not be having at this point. The defense some mental effort we should not be having at this point.

"We have no sense of urgency about what we do and how we do it."

We're going to figure out the guys who are going to play hard for the Gators, the ones that don't we weed them out and go to the next guy."

You can watch the press conference here.

Muschamp wants effort and intensity above all-and the mindset will be to take the game we call football very seriously.

You wonder if Wednesday's comments also applied to effort Muschamp has seen so far this camp.

Another question is, who exactly are the players he is referring to?

Are these the same guys who were shielded by the Urban Meyer regime and given preferential treatment and now that Coach Boom and Co are in town don't want to do things a "new" way, which was the case when some guys sought transfers earlier this summer.

The transition from the finesse of the spread offense to "punch them in the mouth" may not be
pretty, but as a Gator fan you have to like the possibility of what it could produce.

Muschamp finally said, "We got be ready for next Saturday night...We'll be ready."

As has been noted and discussed elsewhere, it was TIME for something along these lines. Coach has a way of lowering the "Boom" in a manner that suits the occasion, even though it may worry folks at the time, have ya noticed?
It happened earlier this year when he cut Janoris Jenkins. We all had mixed feelings on that one, right? You understood he was "sending a message", MORE than one, in fact, but could we afford it? With everything that has come out since, it looks brilliant and prophetic by now.
Same for this seeming outburst: after weeks of upbeat, positive coach-speak while settling the rough outlines of the team he and the coaches expect to function efficiently at game time, it was time to jerk the leash--let 'em know there's real work ahead, they're not ready yet, that the clock is ticking and if you won't give it all, someone who will may step past you.
I'm not sure there was anything this squad could have done to avoid this "Come to Jesus"-lecture. I do know it was a good time for it, though.
