"The road to Easy Street goes through the sewer," Hall of Famer John Madden once said.
Gator Nation breathed a sigh of relief Saturday afternoon with a win over Vanderbilt 26-21. A game the Gators are expected to win.
Coach Will Muschamp felt that relief as well, but he's looking at the big picture. This season is about building his program's character for the future.
“I think that in any game there are positives and negatives," said Muschamp.
"It’s a lot easier to walk in after a win. But I’ve said it before, it’s never as good as it seems or as bad as it seems. I’m looking at the big pictures – the entire season and as we move forward. We need to understand where we’re going from here on out and notice where we’re going. I have seen improvement and some steps back, too. The point of the game is to win, and that’s the goal."
-On the decision to bench center Jonotthan Harrison in favor of junior Sam Robey, Muschamp said "We needed to be more consistent with our snaps, so I felt that it was necessary to make the change. We've had some inconsistencies before and in practice, our decisions are pretty calculated."
-On improved discipline, i.e. fewer penalties. "I am not ready to waive the flag after one game and say 'We're disciplined now'. We need to continue to work on it day in and day out, because we haven't been consistently all year."
-Muschamp also had high praise for senior Jeff Demps- "Jeff's an outstanding player. He's a great teammate. He's been great for the University of Florida. He's won a National Championship individually and as a team [in Track and Field]. He's got a 3.5 grade point average. He's 'Yes or No Sir' That's what's being a student-athlete is all about."
Demps carried for 158 yards Saturday, marking a new career-high. His 158-yard day marked his third 100-yard performance of 2011, the seventh of his career.
Finally Muschamp declared, "We're building our battle scars. We will benefit from the tough times we are traveling through and people better enjoy it while we they got it."
