Our continuing look at the Class of 2012 leads us to Jermi Powell, a linebacker out of Pinellas Park High School in Largo.
The 6-foot-2 high school senior committed to the Gators on Feb. 19 of this year.
As much as Will Muschamp likes to talk about the SEC being a line of scrimmage league, we know that his mentality on defense will have a lot to do the ability of linebackers-and linebackers who are athletic and aggressive. Powell fits that description.
Plus Muschamp likes guys who are simply just football players and can do it all and can move from one position to another.
Powell is considered a top-notch athlete for his position, and even played running back and wide receiver with a great deal of success last season for Pinellas Park. Purdue University even recruited him as a wideout. He's slated as a strong-side or outside linebacker for the Gators but has the ability to play near the line of scrimmage.
At this point his verbal is about as solid as it gets. Though Alabama made him an offer in April.
Upon committing to the Gators he told the Orlando Sentinel, "I was impressed with how they wanted me to meet them earlier than everybody else. I got my own little special tour with the linebackers coach (D.J. Durkin) and they let me walk into the swamp … and then I got to talk to Coach (Will) Muschamp and look him in the eye. That was important.”
He's on facebook.
-Billy Donovan is among the elite college basketball coaches in the country. We may not like the way the Gators finished this past season, but ultimately he's in the upper tier, along with Coach K, Roy Williams, Bill Self and Calipari.
Donovan will be joining USA basketball as a court coach later this month for the USA Basketball Men's U19 National Team Training Camp in Colorado Springs. Patric Youngand Scottie Wilbekin will be there as participants. A 12 man roster will be formed from that training camp which will compete at the FIBA U19 World Championship June 30-10 in Latvia.
It's a great opportunity for the players and adds another dimension to what opportunities playing for Billy D can afford you.
-Here is a column which Urban Meyer was talking about when he said the culture around college football has to change. Jacksonville.com columnist Gene Frenette weakly argues that the football program is now the underachiever at UF.
The simple fact of the matter is talent on the roster post-Tebow went from off the charts-world caliber to just very very good.
Finally, Tim Tebow is signing autographs for his memoir tonight at a Gainesville Wal-Mart-it's pretty much mass-hysteria as you would expect.
