Here we go again. Two so-called "sources" (You know, I'm beginning to despise that word) who refused to be identified "confirm" that Percy Harvin smoked marijuana before he was drug-tested at the Combine this past March: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/news/story?id=4087941
What's their point, I ask - and WHY single out Percy for so much bad publicity? In the past, some NFL draft prospects have committed sins far worse than Percy's smoking a joint - yet I've never seen that big of a deal made out of it before now.
Yes, it was a stupid thing for him to have done knowing that he would be asked to submit to a doping test, but why the need of the media to try and sabotage his chances in the NFL? If they're just trying to attract an audience or just plain hate the fact that he played for the Gators, then they need to re-examine their lives.
Try and convince me that the vast majority of college students who've attended school over a 30-year time frame never tried weed while they were enrolled and I'll tell you this: Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. In spite of the fact that it's illegal, it's still a fact of college life, and nobody can convince me otherwise. Athletes aren't immune from it, either - as much as coaches try to dissuade some of them, they'll still sneak a toke.
It was also a sign of immaturity on Percy's part - and really, no more or no less than that. At one time or another we've all done foolish things in the past, especially during our carefree college years. Now that he's entering the NFL, it's time for Percy, as well as the other members of the Draft Class of 2009, to start growing up. It's all right to be a kid in college, but now that he and the others are entering the pros, it's time to grow up and start acting like men - as well as being responsible for the things they do.
I wish Percy and the rest of our UF candidates well, and leave them with this message: Good luck, stay healthy, and stay out of trouble.
