OK, about Percy Harvin.......

Here we go again. Two so-called "sources" (You know, I'm beginning to despise that word) who refused to be identified "confirm" that Percy Harvin smoked marijuana before he was drug-tested at the Combine this past March: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/news/story?id=4087941

What's their point, I ask - and WHY single out Percy for so much bad publicity? In the past, some NFL draft prospects have committed sins far worse than Percy's smoking a joint - yet I've never seen that big of a deal made out of it before now.

Yes, it was a stupid thing for him to have done knowing that he would be asked to submit to a doping test, but why the need of the media to try and sabotage his chances in the NFL? If they're just trying to attract an audience or just plain hate the fact that he played for the Gators, then they need to re-examine their lives.

Try and convince me that the vast majority of college students who've attended school over a 30-year time frame never tried weed while they were enrolled and I'll tell you this: Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. In spite of the fact that it's illegal, it's still a fact of college life, and nobody can convince me otherwise. Athletes aren't immune from it, either - as much as coaches try to dissuade some of them, they'll still sneak a toke.

It was also a sign of immaturity on Percy's part - and really, no more or no less than that. At one time or another we've all done foolish things in the past, especially during our carefree college years. Now that he's entering the NFL, it's time for Percy, as well as the other members of the Draft Class of 2009, to start growing up. It's all right to be a kid in college, but now that he and the others are entering the pros, it's time to grow up and start acting like men - as well as being responsible for the things they do.

I wish Percy and the rest of our UF candidates well, and leave them with this message: Good luck, stay healthy, and stay out of trouble.

In my opinon Percy is a easy target on this and they have hit him hard. 1. I know he is not a true WR but he is being looked at as one therefore he carries the Gator WR jinx. I know the failed test has nothing to do with on the field performance but they still use it against him. 2. Just the simple fact that he is a Gator. The media are nothing but a bunch of Gator haters and show us know respect when it is clear we have earned it. 3. His injury's. Everyone has already questions about him staying healthy and now he fails a drug test so it gives them reason to drop him in the draft. That is just my opinon and he is getting a very unfair rap on this. If I was Percy I would want to go late in the 1st round anyway just to get on a better team. He will get drafted and he will be a huge help to any team that gets him.

Yeah, especially Dallas - but then again, they make themselves look like hypocrites with the likes of Pacman Jones and Terrell Owens on their past rosters if they're making a big deal about so-called "character issues" by dropping their interest in Percy as an offensive prospect. I don't like Dallas anyway, but that's beside the point.

You're preaching to the choir.

What matters most is what he can bring to a team as far as his skillset. As far as injuries, nobody can try and convince me that those hits he took against the SOW in 2006 and 2008 which took him out of those games weren't deliberate on the part of the noles. Aside from those and his headaches, he's been healthy otherwise. Hopefully this faux-pas was a lesson learned as far as he's concerned and he'll go into the pros with a clearer head. That being said, after this episode he'll be watched closely whereever he winds up.

All we hear are sources this, sources that. I ask: Where is the proof? Show me documentation, show me something on paper. I know Harvin isn't a saint, but come on. SHOW ME THE PROOF OR STFU!! <---This is to the media btw.

It's funny that this crap always comes out before the draft. Mel Kiper, ESPN and all others...........either name your "sources" and/or show me proof! Otherwise, stop messing with peoples lives.

if it was false it would be cleared up by now but instead its been confirmed i dont know what proof you guys need, its not a conspiracy against harvin and nicks they just messed up

dumbass might fall out of the first round because of this, i just hope he goes to a good team and has a great career

so many gator WR's have gone in the first round and not really been that great

You guys are funny to me. There is documented proof out there that Harvin failed the drug test. Theonly reason why he is being singled out s because the only other guy to fail the test was North Carolina WR Brandon Tate. Now, if you were in the media, wo would you spend your time covering? Tate? Who is a late second day pick at best. Or Harvin? Who is an absolute lock to go before pick 20. Of course you're going to focus on Harvin. It may be unfair, but that's the way the world works.

I think some of you may need to take off your orange and blue tinted glasses and step back for a second. Harvin DID fail a drug test. He IS incredibly stupid for doing so. The fact that he's a Gator does not safeguard him in my eyes.

Personally, I don't think it's a big deal for athletes to smoke a lil pot. But, if you can't abstain form smoking the month of your biggest job interview in your life, when you know you'll be tested, then there's smething wrong....

If you have a link to the "documented proof", would you mind posting it here? Apparently these sports reporters don't like to back up their allegations with fact.

The NFL has not released the documents beacuse of contractual reasons. Much the same way as a contract is not released to the public.

Much like a new contract though, these drug results are shared by teams and the league itself. The NFL, not the media, has confirmed the failed drug tests of both Harvin and Tate. Both players have also been placed in the NFL drug program. I'm pretty sure Percy didn't just ask to be placed in that program. It usually requires a FAILED DRUG TEST.

I'm sure if you do a Google search you can find a statement, print it out, and that will be you documented proof.

This isn't Conspiracy Theory, the national media as a whole is not out to get Percy Harvin.

This isn't really directed at you O-Town, it's more to the Gator fans that refuse to believe Percy actually failed the test.

No problem - I'm sure he failed the test, but my problem is with these morons in the media who are nothing more than attention-whores making an even bigger deal out of it just because he's fresh off the NC winning team. So effin' what? He wasn't the first one to get caught by the pi$$ man - and he won't be the last.

Once he's drafted, he'll likely need to go through the NFL's substance-abuse program. The smartest thing he can do from here on out is keep his nose clean.

Since you obviously have seen the test and obviously a budding lawyer, could you forward me a copy? Thanks.

In reference to your "sarcasm dripping post" (by the way, I'm glad ypu pointed that out. Otherwise, I might not have noticed.) Go back and read the post, the actual test, much like NFL contracts, are not available to the public. It's not public record. That being said, the NFL released the information to the media. The NFL would NOT do this without an actual failed test. Also, Harvin was automatically entered into the NFL's substance abuse program once he was drafted by Minnesota yesterday. Guess what? You cannot be admitted into that prestigious program until you have FAILED A DRUG TEST!

As a side note, it's funny that you mention the whole "budding lawyer" thing. I did graduate with a degree in Criminology and I took the LSAT, and received a fairly decent grade. I was also accepted by a few prominent law schools, including our very own Levin. I decided to follow a different path in academia however, so I guess the "budding" title will have to do.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — "Lintera Harvin playfully describes herself as a “crack-the-whip big sister.” But recently she’s needed to show her younger brother, Percy, her compassionate side, too.

News that Percy tested positive for marijuana a few months before the NFL draft raised even more questions about the character of the dynamic wide receiver from Florida. Combined with a few other incidents in Harvin’s past, the latest red flag seemed to be the final straw for some NFL teams and brought undesirable scrutiny days before the draft.

Lintera, 23, consoled and counseled her brother, just like she always has.

“He cried and was so hard on himself,” she said. “He said, ’I really can’t believe I made this stupid mistake at a time like this.’ I think he got a little discouraged. But that’s part of growing up. You make your bed, you have to lie in it. I just told him to deal with it and move forward in a mature manner.”

WOW, I hope everything turns out for Percy and I think it will. I am a Vikings fan now, after reading some of the stuff out there on their "vetting" process. Also If UM thinks they're ok then that's a good endorsement.
