Former Gator assistant basketball coach John Pelphrey appears content to spend next season away from coaching.
Pelphrey told Kentucky.com following his induction into the Kentucky basketball high school Hall of Fame that he’s going to take a year off to spend time with his family.
“More than likely, I’m not going to be coaching next year,” Pelphrey told Kentucky.com. “A couple of people have reached out in terms of broadcasting. We’ll have to wait and see if anything materializes there.”
Pelphrey’s son, Jaxson, is a starting baseball player (first baseman) going into his senior year at P.K. Yonge High. His daughter, Grace, is a sophomore basketball player at P.K. Yonge.
“I’m going to try with the time I have be a champion of my circumstance for my family for however long it lasts,” Pelphrey said. “It’s a unique opportunity. I want to look back on it and say that year off from coaching, I did a great job with it.
“I’ll get back in at some point in time, somewhere hopefully at a great place and continue to have an opportunity to work with young men and be around the game that a I love so much.”

Other notes:
– First-year Florida basketball coach Michael White was at the Peach Jam over the weekend. Among prospects that White watched included 2016 point guard De’Aron Fox, considered one of the top point guards in the Class of 2016. But Fox, a Katy, Texas, native, appears to be leaning toward playing closer to home at Kansas, Texas or Baylor. Top Florida asssitant Dusty May, meanwhile, was at an Adidas Uprising Tournament in Atlanta watching 2017 four-star forward Tomas Murphy, the younger brother of current Gator forward Alex Murphy and former Gator forward Erik Murphy.
– More on former Gator forward Erik Murphy — he will play for the Finnish National Team over the summer, then will play for Besiktas in Turkey. Murphy, who averaged 11.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in the NBDL with the Austin Toros last season, has reached a two-year deal to play for the Turkish club.
– Former Gator guard Michael Frazier II is averaging 8 points and 3.5 rebounds in his first two summer league games for the Golden State Warriors. Frazier is 0 of 5 from 3-point range. Former Gator center Chris Walker has averaged 4.5 points and 3 rebounds in two summer league games with the Houston Rockets.
