SEC Media Days, Day II

News Bot

After listening to players and coaches talk for two days at SEC Media Days, I have to keep reminding myself of a basic fact — for every winner, there is a loser.

And that means that no matter how much optimism each of these 14 teams has right now, there is plenty of disappointment coming for some of them.

But will it be enough to have what we have this year — four new coaches?

I can’t remember the last time I came to this event when there really isn’t a coach on the hot seat. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

Nobody thought Gene Chizik was on the hot seat when he spoke here a year ago. And certainly, Bobby Petrino didn’t get canned because of his won-loss record.

Something wild could happen and there could be a new coach a year from now. Dan Mullen joked about “hoping to be back here next year” but I can’t see this team having a record that would lead to him being fired.

A coach could leave for another job, whether it be the NFL or a better college jobs. But there aren’t too many college jobs that would attract SEC coaches.

Probably the guy with the least amount of job security is Missouri’s Gary Pinkel, but I have a feeling he’s going to get the Tigers back on the right side of the ledger.

So, if we are enjoying this Media Days, we’re probably going to get a repeat next year.
