VERO BEACH — "Former University of Florida quarterback Shane Matthews spoke at the Treasure Coast Gator Toast event Tuesday at The Moorings Club, as the Treasure Coast Gator Club celebrated Gator Nation by awarding 17 scholarships to students in St. Lucie and Indian River county.
Matthews, the starting quarterback under Steve Spurrier from 1990-92, led the Gators to back-to-back SEC championships and was a two-time SEC Player of the Year before going on to a 14-year career in the NFL. He currently is a businessman in the Gainesville area and has a sports talk show on ESPN Radio. Matthews, 39, sat down with Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers and talked about the past and present of Florida football."
