Spur Dog will be hanging around

On his radio call-in show last Thursday, Steve Spurrier dropped a little news on the listeners around the state of South Carolina when he said he planned to retire from coaching in three or four years.
Here’s the real news: there’s an excellent chance that isn’t going to happen.
Like the former HBC has often said, he has a track record with this sort of thing.
“Yeah, I’ve been saying three or four years for about the last 10 years,” Spurrier said earlier this week. “I’m still saying that. That’s the way you feel. Then three or four years go by and you say, ‘You know what, maybe three of four.’ Those go by and you say three or four more.”
Back in the day at Florida, Spurrier used to say he didn’t plan on coaching very deep into his 60s. Well, he’s 66 now and showing no signs of slowing down (other than his statement on the radio last week).
Although he coached USC to its first Eastern Division title last season, Spurrier has some unfinished business to take care of in Columbia.
“We’ve got a good team, but we’ve not reached our pinnacle,” he said. “Hopefully, we can get there real soon. I think we’ve recruited well, and we have a good bunch coming in this year. We’ll see how it all plays out.”
Chances are it will play out with Spurrier coaching right into his 70s.
