Tebow to unveil new delivery at pro day

I'm no expert, but this might be a case of too little, too late. Especially if he does not plan on throwing at the Combine. If he does the 40, squats, bench press, cone, shuttle, and vertical jump without throwing (assuming he had a choice), then he is only padding his draft-ability as a tight end or fullback. I hope I'm wrong, because I believe he can change people's minds. I figured the Senior Bowl would be step 1, the Combine would be step 2 in changing opinions, and the Pro Day would be step 3. By skipping some exposure, it just means he has to work that much harder to change opinions on Pro Day. He can do it, but I had hoped he would relish every moment to prove people wrong.

my comment on OnlyGators.com about the story....

From what I saw in the video, it seems like his mechanics are already a lot better. I think the reason why his throwing motion changed from high school to college could have been the intense shoulder and arm work outs in training with Coach Mickey Marotti. His freshman year he put on quite a bit of muscle in his arms as you could see in the 06 national championship game. That may have made it harder for Tim to bring the ball back behind his ear and release. But I have no doubts that McShay and Kiper will be trying to say that Tebow cannot revamp his whole mechanical system in 6 weeks. But we all know not to count Tim out of ANYTHING. This is a big step for him, and I think it will work out great. As far as Meyer’s ways of preparing kids for the NFL, that is only a small portion of his job description. His job is to win championships at Florida the best way he can. And I think he’s succeeded so far. I don’t think what anybody says about UF and Meyer is going to change kids’ minds about wanting to come here. The rings speak for themselves.

Good comment. If this works out, then Tebow will gain stud points for his versatility. You might be onto something about his bulk affecting his throwing motion. I remember reading about Joe Montana making his comeback in '92-'93. He was always a scrawny QB, but he worked out so much trying to mount an impressive comeback from injury that it altered his throwing motion. Tebow's throws did look nice in his video, but those were all short throws. Maybe he just wants to work on his medium and long range throws before completing his change.

Another point of view from Ben Volin: http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/gatorbytes/2010/02/22/whats-it-like-to-help-tim-tebow-prepare-for-the-nfl-d1s-kurt-hester-is-here-to-tell-you/#more-3557

Johnny hits the nail on the head here. It seems as though bashing Urban Meyer is in vogue with the media nowadays, but preparing individual players for the NFL Combine and draft day is up to specialized coaches such as Steve DeBerg in the Tampa Bay area and others to do - not the head coach of a college program, whose main priority is to prepare his team for gameday, win games and win championships. Coach Meyer can't solely focus on one or a small handful of players to get them ready for the next level, so for the media to make these accusations about his not getting Tebow ready for the next level is beyond absurd. If they're using tactics on purpose to parallel what Slimebaum is trying to do (and failing to do) in trying to cast a negative light on our program and adversely affect our recruiting, they're doing so in vain.

These media morons fail to realize that even though it's the same game, the NFL and the NCAA are as different as night and day as far as style and general culture go. For any of these so-called "experts" to act as clairvoyants in trying to predict how well a player will perform at the next level is also absurd. As things have turned out, many unknowns have turned out to be overachievers, and on the other hand many of the highly-touted have flopped. Still, the jury's out on Tebow and the rest of the NFL Draft Class of 2010. Until they've actually played a few downs, it's really hard to pass judgement on them.

Funny thing, I never heard all this bullshit leveled at Spurrier over not having "adequately" prepared Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerffel or Rex Grossman for the NFL. Sure they were labeled "products of the system", but the finger wasn't solely pointed at SOS - that, and recruiting never suffered in spite of the fact that they didn't enjoy a high level of success in the pros.

And for those who whine about UF not having a "pro-style" offense, let me say this: Did Zook's "standard fare" of shotgun draws and bubble screens work wonders for our offense? Did we win championships from 2002-04? Did it do anything constructive for Chris Leak? Anybody with one ounce of common sense knows that the answer to all of those questions is NO. And look where Leak is right now - a backup in the CFL. As far as I'm concerned, Leak wouldn't even be at that level had it not been for Urban Meyer and his easing him out of that comfort zone Zook created for him - as I see it, the Zooker babied Leak too much and let Grossman's talent (as well as discipline) go to waste in the span of one season.

Fasten your seat belts, gang - this off-season's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Just got this in a email from my friends at GatorsandMore.com:

-Tebow 2.0?? Can Tim really change his mechanics in time for Pro Day in Gainesville? It certainly seems like he is making a run at it. ESPN is reporting that Tebow is making strides in Nashville and will be ready to unveil his new look at Pro Day on March 17th. Personally I find it hilarious that after 22 years there is still anyone doubting that Tim can do anything he sets his mind to. There are members of the national media that want him to fail so badly they can taste it. It is a shame that in this day and time when a person like Tim, who is a role model for kids everywhere, comes along, instead of applauding him for the good he does some choose to criticize him and hope for him to fail. I just don't understand it.

As I've said over here and on Adam's board (onlygators.com), the jury's still out on Tebow's being able to perform at the next level. The only fair way to assess his ability at the next level is to actually see him in action and give him the benefit of a doubt.

I would argue one step further and say that they are not even the same game. NCAA football is more like CFL in many ways than it is like NFL, although cosmetically NCAAF looks more like CFL.

It's been said here before--Urban Meyer does not get paid to prepare anybody for the NFL. If anything, he gets paid to prepare people for life, where payment from the player is in the form of making grades and playing football.

I think anybody with a working brain can tell that Tebow is one of those people that can do ANYTHING he puts his mind to. And I think anybody that is rooting for him to fail, simply has something against the Gator program all together. Because if you are a general sports fan, and know enough about football, then obviously you know that Tebow is one of the best to ever play the game.

One of the key attributes we keep hearing about Timmy is that he is smart. As long as he has a good head on his shoulders, we should not count him out. Many critics did not like Peyton Manning's footwork, but they realized how smart that kid from UT was and look at him now being compared against the all-time greats. Granted, Tim Tebow has a few more faults than Peyton Manning had at a similar stage in their careers, but Timmy is smart enough to start addressing those faults. I just hope I am wrong on the too little, too late comment.
