The Sunday Blog, down the homestretch

The Sunday Blog is now bowl eligible because everyone in the SEC is bowl eligible. Uh, sorry Vandy fans.

1. Seriously, what are they going to do with all these SEC teams? There are now 11 that are bowl eligible and it could be 13 if Tennessee beats Vanderbilt as expected and Kentucky upsets Louisville. The league has nine bowl tie-ins plus whatever happens with the College Football Playoff. Don’t worry. They’ll find spots for everyone. We have no idea where Florida will end up. On the one hand, the brand is one of America’s best and after the way UF fans took over Vanderbilt’s stadium I’d think the Music City Bowl would be interested. On the other hand, we’re talking about a team with an interim coach, which takes some of the appeal away.

2. Didn’t you use to be Mississippi? Ole Miss was enjoying its special season until reality — also known as the SEC West — put a beatdown on its season. The Rebels have lost three of their last four and could go from being in the CFP to 8-4 if they lose to Mississippi State. “I’m certain our confidence is probably not the same as it was a month ago,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said. And didn’t you use to be hard luck Arkansas? The Razorbacks finally figured out the oldest axiom in college football — if the other team doesn’t score, you can’t lose the game.

3. Maybe we should start a pool for this week where everyone picks a player who will break the FBS rushing record. Samaje Perine only needed a week to break Melvin Gordon’s mark. I wonder if Gordon wishes he had played the fourth quarter now. Perine’s 427 yards may need an asterisk. As in * — came against Kansas.

4. I found this in the NCAA football rulebook, Rule 9, Section 2, Article 4: “Persons subject to the rules shall not intentionally contact a game official forcibly during the game. PENALTY—Administer as a dead-ball foul. 15 yards from the succeeding spot.” And that’s all I have to say about that.
