While a number of Gators are making an impact in the NBA playoffs, even more are playing well overseas.
One of those is former Gator forward Alex Tyus, who was named Euroleague’s MVP for April on Tuesday.
Tyus has helped lead Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv to the Euroleague Final Four. During Maccabi’s playoff run, the 6-foot-9 Tyus averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.
Here’s a highlight video of Tyus during Maccabi’s playoff run. A three year starter and four-year player at UF (2007-11), Tyus still shares the record with Al Horford for most rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game (17). Tyus had 19 points and 17 rebounds in UF’s 83-74 overtime win over BYU in the 2011 Sweet 16.
Other notes:
CBSSports.com’s Gary Parrish has former Gator center Patric Young going 47th overall (17th pick, second round) to the Philadelphia 76ers in his latest 2014 NBA mock draft. Point guard Scottie Wilbekin and small forward Casey Prather didn’t make the cut.
Here’s a good column from David Whitley in the Orlando Sentinel explaining the PED suspension of former Gator and current Memphis Grizzlies point guard Nick Calathes. Apparently, it was all about the hair.
