UF commit status in limbo

Florida has yet to announce its 2015 signing class, and when it does, a notable name could be left off the list.

North Little Rock (Ark) High basketball coach Johnny Rice told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that guard KeVaughn Allen is “still committed” to Florida, but won’t sign during this week’s early Division I signing period.

Allen’s delay in signing could be a numbers issue. The Gators are severely oversigned for 2015-16, with 16 scholarship players slated to fill 13 spots. Of course, that could change by the spring depending on players transferring or leaving early for the NBA draft. Florida forwards Kevarrius Hayes and Noah Dickerson both signed their letters of intent on Wednesday, but Hayes and 2015 forward commit Keith Stone have yet to announce their signings.

Allen is the highest-rated player in UF’s 2015 class, ranked 42nd in the nation in ESPN.com’s list of Top 100 prospects. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard lit it up at the Peach Jam last summer, averaging 22.4 points on 53.1 percent 3-point shooting against the top players in his class in the country. He’s also received scholarship offers from Arkansas and Memphis, and there are some rumblings that he may be having second thoughts and is considering playing closer to home.

Allen’s loss would be a blow, but Florida will still be deep in the backcourt if Eli Carter, Michael Frazier II and Kasey Hill all return in 2015-16, and Brandone Francis becomes academically eligible.
