University of Florida football has holes - and the talent to fill them

GAINESVILLE — "As the Florida Gators begin pre-season practices Thursday, most fans are curious to see how new starting quarterback John Brantley handles replacing Tim Tebow.

But that is not on coach Urban Meyer's mind. He already is convinced Brantley will be fine. Instead, one of Meyer's main concerns is solidifying Brantley's supporting cast.

"We have a real clear understanding of what John Brantley can do," he said. "It's the guys around him. ... One common characteristic of a great quarterback is the personnel around him. I think we have it, but it's not been identified yet.

"It's going to be a big job for us in training camp."

I'm not concerned about the offensive line or the running backs. The Gators biggest concern is the wide receiver position -- if Brantley is going to be a stud, someone who will have step up and catch all the balls.

I'm worried about the linebackers. They are fast, but are they big enough to stop the power running game?

Last year we had 2 shutdown corners, and now we are down to one. We need great play from whoever plays opposite of Jenkins.
