Here in New Orleans, they have a lot to talk about.
And it has nothing to do with Kentucky’s dominance or whether or not Tennessee can play its way into the SEC Tournament.
In fact, you’d hardly know the tournament is being played here this week. There are few reminders. But, to be honest, this isn’t an event for the New Orleans residents. These people have the Final Four and Super Bowl coming up.
And they have other things to worry about.
In the space of a few days, Saints fans have seen their hero Drew Brees get slapped with a franchise tag and he’s not happy about it. And they’ve been told their defense has been investigated by the NFL for paying bounties for knocking players out of games.
So if you hit the French Quarter, you’re not going to hear about the SEC Tournament. Most of the people I talked to didn’t even realize it was going on. The guy shucking oysters at Acme Oyster House gave a running diatribe about how the NFL was picking on the Saints. The girl serving cold ones at Felix’s was angry about the whole Brees thing.
Once they start playing games on Thursday, the tourney will get some publicity but for now, the media and fans are focused on other things.
