"Florida coach Urban Meyer has plenty to be thankful for today — a healthy family, an 11-0 record, a $4 million annual contract and a couple of “iconic” national championship rings, for starters.
But he also will be giving thanks for the haul of players he recruited in the winter of 2006. Without those players, he may not have any of those things mentioned above.
Meyer signed someone named Percy Harvin, whom Rivals.com ranked as the top prospect in the nation. He got a linebacker named Brandon Spikes, ranked No. 2 at his position in the country. And he signed Tim Tebow, rated as the second-best quarterback in the country, behind Mitch Mustain.
“You thought you had an opportunity to be pretty special, because there was a lot of guys who were highly touted or whatever,” Tebow said. “But we know how much that means – nothing at all.”
Except that collection of talent has meant everything to the Gators.
Four years later, Meyer’s 2006 recruiting class aims for its third national title in four years. Even without another title, the players have cemented themselves as the most successful recruiting class in SEC history, and perhaps one of the best of all time."
