Officials say football fans made big mess

Athens Banner-Herald | Story updated at 11:21 pm on 11/4/2008

ST. SIMONS ISLAND - Football fans who poured onto St. Simons Island before Saturday's Georgia-Florida football game left a Glynn County police official disgusted.
Police Chief Matt Doering said Monday, "It was the ugliest, (most) unruly conduct that I've seen in a long time. Littering was the biggest problem we had. They left behind an ungodly mess. The disrespect these people showed to our community was horrible."
Thousands of Georgia fans descended on the beaches Friday.
Doering said officers arrested several people for urinating in public, for disorderly conduct and driving under the influence.
