LOL - Nah, I was around when all that went down. Just about the same time Pell & crew went down. I remember how scared everyone was that the NCAA might drop the axe on UF. But, I could see Auburn getting booted out of the SEC, and a huge loss in scholarships, along with no live TV.

In actuallity, the SMU Death Penalty is what killed the old Southwest Conference. The NCAA realized what a mistake that was, and I seriously doubt another institution would suffer the same fate, again, even Auburn. Besides, those involved at Auburn have much more to worry about....mainly jail time.

If all those who are involved at Auburn get indicted and then convicted, receiving jail sentences, would the NCAA really be that harsh on Auburn? Maybe just some loss of scholarships and forfieture on revenues.

According to Wikipedia, that all but three schools in the were on probation during that same time. Only Texas and Texas A&M were the only school not to lose money that time. Plus there last eight conference champs lost their games. Sure it wasn't the only reason but one of the main ones. Also SEC benefited with the addition of Arkansas. I don't think losing Auburn would hurt the SEC, they just add another team.

If Auburn were to be booted out of the SEC, I think adding a team from Texas would be the smart move for a replacement.

Ditto on both your points, G8R--the NCAA will NOT enforce the death penalty again (with the money on the line by now, they'd be risking their OWN position, which depends after all on the "member institutions" going along with all their rulings), not even on Auburn (they WILL do "everything BUT--"), the SEC could indeed "throw the bums out", and if they do, I agree:
Bringing in a Texas team, as they were rumored to be very close to arranging when it looked like the Big 12 was dissolving, would be a smart (and attractive) move.

Why was SMU given the Death Penalty when other schools were doing the same things in the same era?

Had been repeatedly on probation, more so than any other school at the time.

Then, while on probation, committed same/new violations, again.
