Assistant coach Aubrey Hill, two Gators named in U-Miami allegations

August 16, 2011-------The hottest topic in all of sports has ties to a current Florida assistant coach and two Florida players.

If you haven't seen Yahoo Sports report on recruiting violations at the University of Miami, a booster by the name of Nevin Shapiro (currently in jail for a Ponzi Scheme) spilled the beans to the website about a laundry list of NCAA no-no's.

Among those mentioned in the Yahoo Sports report are Gators assistant coach and current Florida Gators recruiting coordinator Aubrey Hill who previously held the sames positions at Miami last season, and two current Gators, sophomore Andre Debose and offensive tackle Matt Patchan.

The NCAA is known for thoroughness, so even though 16 current Hurricanes are mentioned, the mere fact that some recruits went elsewhere in terms of future eligibility would not matter to the NCAA in fact they received improper benefits.

Hill had the option of returning to Miami for this season even though head coach Randy Shannon was fired, incoming Miami coach Al Golden retained Hill but the former Gator decided to return home where he was hired by Will Muschamp.

According to the Yahoo report, in 2008 the booster provided cash to Miami assistants during a visit to the booster's home. Among three recruits present that night were Debose as was hill who was currently Miami's wide receiver's coach. A Miami equipment manager actually took the money and showed the potential recruits a good time, including visits to night clubs and strip clubs.

Again just allegations at this point. Patchan's name is mentioned as one of several Miami recruits who visited the booster's home in 2007.

If the allegations have merit it's damning for Hill. (click here for specific allegations against Hill). Even if he directly did not receive cash, the charges are he knowingly brought recruits to a booster's home where cash was exchanged.

Alas, the University of Florida has issued a statement, in effect fully standing behind Hill, further indicating the report is simply one man's story-one man which questionable motives.

The statement from the Athletic Dept. reads as follows:

“While we declined comment for Yahoo’s request, Coach Hill indicated he was very comfortable with, and very confident in how he conducted himself while at the University of Miami."

No mention of Debose or Patchan are mentioned but if there is any truth to the claims by the booster, both of those players' collegiate careers are jeopardy.

Just another day in college football.

Um, everything you mention here is SPOKEN OF in the yahoo.com story, but I urge concerned readers to read it for themselves--it's ALREADY a THIRD hand recounting of SECOND hand charges and allegations BEFORE reading this piece, which both further interprets (I'm sure inadvertently, but still...) and warns of consequences from among a large body of information, among which countless names, dates, transactions, and accompanying wide-ranging accusations are included. As I note in a separate thread here, the repercussions for our players may very well not be near as dire as implied here; however, I suspect that the same may not be true for Coach Hill. At the least, he will likely find himself entangled in the story, its ever-widening public spotlight and steadily tightening official focus.
