Some observations from Florida’s 60-59 loss at Vanderbilt.
– With forward Justin Leon hurt and center John Egbunu in foul trouble, Florida needed some frontcourt reserves to step up. But none answered the bell. Center Schuyler Rimmer missed a wide open layup, forward DeVon Walker air-balled a free throw and forward Devin Robinson struggled defensively off the bench. Robinson, Rimmer, Walker and Kevarrius Hayes combined to go 0 of 8 from the floor for just 2 points.
– The Gators were at their best when their defense fueled their offense, scoring 15 points off 19 Vanderbilt turnovers. But Florida coach Mike White, referencing some missed on switches in the first half and his teams 24 overall fouls, felt his team’s defensive effort was just OK. “On nights like this, our defense needs to be really, really good,” White said. “It’s got to carry us. Those eight or 10 miscues, I keep going back to all the extra possessions they had, the free-throw line blockouts, you can’t expect seven of those on the road and beat Vandy on the road, it’s not gonna happen.”
– Vanderbilt’s early double-teaming forward of Dorian Finney-Smith seemed to wear on the 6-foot-8 forward as the game went on. Finney-Smith still posted a double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds) and worked hard on the boards, but had five of UF’s 13 turnovers.
