Bowden getting pressure to retire after '09

One of Florida State University's most powerful alums said Sunday that this should be Bobby Bowden's last season as the Seminoles' football coach.

Jim Smith, the chair of the university's Board of Trustees and a 1962 graduate of FSU, also said it is time to eliminate any doubt about Jimbo Fisher's role and responsibilities in the football program.
"My hope is frankly that we'll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden Era," said Smith, who has served as Secretary of State, Chief of Staff in the Governor's Office and State Attorney General. "... I do appreciate what he's done for us, what he's done for the program, what's he done really for the state of Florida.
"But I think the record will show that the Seminole Nation has been more than patient. We have been in a decline not for a year or two or three but I think we're coming up on seven or eight. I think enough is enough."
Smith said the change in command should not come until after the season.

Well, sorry to all the nole fans but IMHO Jimbo will not be the answer to there prayers...I believe he has partly to blame for the way they are playing as of now....idk I just don't think anything will change....he just doesn't have that "unf" factor that even somone like lame kitten brings

I asked some of my FSU friends and they all want Bobby to go ... and go now. The new generation of fans don't care about Bobby's legacy. Kids who are freshmen at FSU now were born in like 1991. They don't care about what he did in the past, they just want to win now.

I'm torn as to what I want to see happen to FSU this season. I want to see them lose and not make a bowl, but if they lose a few more, I don't see how Bowden lasts another season, and I want him to stay as long as possible to keep their coaching staff in disarray.

Thought this was so funny when I heard it but forgot to post it

Jim Smith is the chairman of the Florida State Board of Trustees. Earlier this week, he made some comments to the Tallahassee Democrat. You might have heard about those comments. He said this should be the final season for Bobby Bowden. He said “enough is enough” for the Bowden era. Smith also talked to the Associated Press. He also talked to the St. Petersburg Times.
After he didn’t return several of my calls to his office, I stopped by Smith’s office in Tallahassee on Tuesday afternoon seeking additional comment. He didn’t want to talk. Maybe he didn’t want to talk because he was afraid he might say something like this:

“Frankly, it was personally very painful for me because I have the utmost respect for Coach Bowden and what he's done. I told somebody (Monday), it's sort of like you have to put your favorite dog down; you know it's the right thing to do but you sure feel bad about it.”
But wait. Smith already said something like that. In fact, he said exactly that. Smith made those comments in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times for a story published on Tuesday. And what a vile thing to say. Comparing the Bowden situation to putting “your favorite dog down?” Unbelievable.

Just when you think things have calmed down regarding the Florida State situation, dadgummit if Bobby Bowden doesn't go and throw another log on the dadgum fire.

And that sound you just heard? That was Jim "Mr. FSU" Smith kicking the old dog he thinks should be put down.

In an interview with Tony Barnhardt for his CBS Sports.com gig, Bowden let loose with talk that will leave every single one of his critics and detractors cringing. Talk of coming back in 2010.

"Right now I think you know where I'm leaning," Bowden said. "I'm leaning toward coming back [next season]."

Uh-oh.

Bowden continued with his ongoing defensive tack, saying that he's "been through this before" -- he hasn't, at least not like this -- and that "it's not like we're getting trounced" -- good point, but not likely to satiate the growing mob toting pitchforks and torches.

Bowden then trotted out his most potent weapon, one that tugs at the heart just a bit and also may contain a hint of truth -- he would never do anything to tear down what he's built.

"If I thought I was hurting Florida State and that I couldn't do it any more, I would walk away," Bowden said. "But that's not what I see right now."

Of course, some would argue that Bowden's already done just that, that his hanging on has already hurt the program he built from the ground up. And that would a hardy position to argue.

But, it's the genesis of the current divide between the Bobby supporters and the Bowden supporters-turned-critics. There's a chasm of Grand Canyon proportions between both sides, and it was a gap widened by the asinine public statements of one Mr. Smith.

So, what exactly should be done?

Barnhardt has the perfect answer, and it's the reason why he's Mr. College Football.

But as soon as this season is over, a huge dose of clarity needs to be injected into the Florida State football program. A news conference should be called to announce one of two things: 1) Bobby Bowden is retiring, or 2) Bowden is coming back for his farewell season, after which Fisher will take over.
Unfortunately, that Wisdom of Solomon solution would be dependent on both sides putting their egos and agendas to the side. Based on the last two weeks, there's no dadgum chance of that happening.
