Chris Rainey’s case could be clearer by Friday; defense attorney not expecting felony

"The lawyer for Florida receiver Chris Rainey believes his client ultimately will not be charged with a felony after last week’s arrest for aggravated stalking.

Police arrested Rainey after responding to a 911 from his 35-year-old girlfriend’s residence. He admitted sending a text that read, “Time to Die (expletive) u and ur???” after she would not let him inside.

Huntley Johnson, Jr., a Gainesville defense attorney who handles most cases involving UF players, said Rainey’s actions do not constitute a felony."

Even if it's not a felony, is this not a violation of the Coach's rule against mistreating women? What should be the next step?

In spite of the media hacks and others calling for Rainey's dismissal, he did not commit an act of physical violence against his girlfriend; if that was the case Urban would have dismissed him immediately as Jacques Rickerson was back in '08 for having done just that. Once the courts have handed down their decision, Urban will act accordingly - the most that could happen is Rainey having to forfeit his scholarship, which IMO would be fair punishment. One way or another, Rainey will pay the price for doing something stupid.

We've gotten a lot of mileage from his texted words around the office and at the gym. Whenever somebody does something remotely bad or offensive they get the: "Time to die b___!"

Hey, that's not something to joke about! Someone could have gotten killed, or worse, hurt! Time to die b*****!

Is there even a case without her pressing charges? There ARE certain kinds of these charges where they CAN proceed, but I'm not sure this one falls into either the "Domestic Violence" (there WAS no "violence", actually) OR "Terroristic Threat" (always a little hazy, especially here) categories. Seems like a likely PTI (PreTrial Intervention) for a misdemeanor, eventually quashed (removed from his record) provided he does everything asked and behaves himself for some reasonable amount of time.

There's no battery charges since there was no physical contact. And there cannot be assault charges since the girl already said she was never in any kind of danger. Any half decent lawyer can get the charges whittled down to practically nothing at this point.
