Former Florida 2009 commitment DeShawn Painter said he asked to be released from his letter of intent due to playing time issues and being closer to home.
The 6-foot-9 Painter, ranked 64th in the nation by Rivals.com in the Class of 2009, described the split with the Gators as a “mutual decision.”
“I wanted to play as a freshman,” said Painter, who signed with North Carolina State on Thursday.
“I wanted to know if I wasn’t going to play much. We had a mutual decision. It wasn’t just one thing.”
Painter said he left Florida on good terms. Academically, Painter said he was on track to qualify when he left Florida in April and is now qualified to play at North Carolina State.
“Me and Coach (Billy) Donovan, we’re straight,” Painter said. “We still talk every now and then. He was the one who told me if I wasn’t going to be happy then maybe it was a good idea (to part ways.)”
Painter was part of a string of four Florida defections in the span of three weeks. During that time, forwards Allan Chaney and Alex Tyus both announced they were transferring, and starting point guard Nick Calathes put his name into the NBA draft without an agent.
