-Will Muschamp gave out his weekly hardware Monday and the winners are as follows:
Offensive Player of the Week: Chris Rainey
Scrap Iron award: Dan Wenger
Extra effort award: RB Mike Gillislee.
Says Muschamp "Mike's a guy that really brings an element of toughness to our football team and runs with his pads down. He did a really nice job in the second half running the football and in protection."
Defensive Player of the Week: Lerentee McCray
The Ball Hawk award: Matt Elam
Special teams player of the game: Darrin Kitchen.
Says Muschamp, "We are real proud of Darrin. He is a guy who really understands his role on the team at this point. He was productive in our kick units and covering. As a kick-off coverage unit he has contributed a lot.
Big play award: Andre Debose for the 50-yard return on the opening kickoff.
-The SEC schedule begins Saturday afternoon in Gainesville against the Tennessee Vols. The ramifications of the match-up are obvious both both programs and head coaches. It will be a nationally televised game on CBS at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Muschamp had this to say about how the Gators will prepare for the Vols this week:
"There are a lot of factors involved: how much can they handle, how they are going to respond in the Swamp in a nationally-televised game on CBS. You need to be cognizant of that when you game plan and as you call the game about how they'll react and respond through the game. A lot of times as you prepare throughout the game you don't want to pull something out that you haven‟t practiced before. You can do that with a veteran group, but not with a young group. The hay is in the barn after Thursday. We aren't adding stuff on Fridays."
Mushamp's comments came before he learned about the arrest of backup linebacker Dee Finley. Beyond the obvious reasons why you don't want a player arrested, the timing is important too. Last year before UT Chris Rainey was arrested. Finley's arrest could be or is a distraction for this Florida Gator football team as they prep for Tennessee.
-You have probably noticed that Gator defensive lineman Dominique Easley will dance in-between plays. It has to be somewhat distracting for the offensive linemen. He was called for one encroaching penalty Saturday, but beyond that Muschamp doesn't have a problem with Easley's perpetual movement.
“I think every player is different," said Muschamp. "Obviously as it is written in the rules he has to abide by it, and our officiating crew does an outstanding job. As long as he‟s not doing anything to taunt our opponent I‟m fine with that. I want our guys to be who they are."
-We didn't see much blitzing if any against UAB. The Gators did not record a sack in Saturday's game, despited dominating on defense. That is by design.
"We need to get pressure with four guys rushing," said Muschamp. "That‟s the best pass defense in the America. We need to rush four guys and do a better job at that.”
-The entire Gator Nation is excited about the return of Sharrif Floyd to the field. Floyd sat out two games because of what the NCAA deemed illegal benefits.
Muschamp had this to say about Floyd's return "I'm looking forward to seeing him play. First of all he‟s a nice young man. Secondly, he's a great football player. We're excited to have him back."
-Muscahmp also said that Jeff Demps (shoulder) and Jordan Reed (hamstring) will be fine and will play Saturday afternoon.
-Tight end A.C. Leonard will begin working out this week as he continues to rehab from August knee surgery.
-The game time for the Kentucky game in Lexington has been set. The game will kickoff on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. ET at Commonwealth Stadium. The game will air either on ESPN or ESPN2.
