University of Florida redshirt senior Gary Beemer (Valrico, Fla.) has been nominated for the Rudy Award, announced on Thursday by the Rudy Foundation.

A record 55 of the 120 Division I football programs submitted a nomination and every Division I conference was represented for the Award, which honors student-athletes who demonstrate exemplary character, courage, contribution and commitment as members of their collegiate football teams.

Beemer is a defensive lineman who enrolled at Florida in the August of 2006 and walked on to the football team in March of 2008. He has earned "Scout Team Player of the Week" honors on two different occasions for his dedication to the team and hard work in practice.

He has had such a positive impact on the team that on Senior Day, head coach Urban Meyer put him in the game to score a touchdown versus Appalachian State to reward him for his efforts. Through his hard work, he has earned a job as a strength coach at Florida as he pursues a graduate degree in Fitness and Wellness.

Each finalist will be presented with a classic finalist award and have an academic scholarship made in his name to the general scholarship fund of his college or university, as well as have travel expenses paid to the event. An overall winner will be chosen and presented with the top scholarship and bronze RUDY AWARD trophy.

The 2010 Award Selection Committee includes football coaches Barry Alvarez, David Bailiff, Gary Barnett, Fisher DeBerry, Dennis Franchione, June Jones, Chuck Knox, Gary Patterson, Buddy Pough, Jackie Sherrill and Dick Tomey, as well as former Washington Redskins’ Quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams. Prominent businessman Peter Murphy, Jr., again serves as Chairman. Fan votes for the RUDY AWARD also will contribute to the Selection Process. Finalists will be announced December 14 and listed on www.CollegeRudyAwards.com.

Drew Combs (TCU), Terry Clayton (Kentucky) and LeVon Morefield (Akron) won the Rudy Award in 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively.

It’s not about the Stats, it’s about the Heart!

Daniel ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger founded The College Football Rudy Awards to honor Division I football players who brought that ‘something extra’ to the team.

Rudy wanted to find the most inspirational and motivational players in America who best defined what he refers to as "The Four C's": Character, Courage, Contribution & Commitment.

The College Football Rudy Awards were launched in 2007. During the first year, 26 coaches nominated the ‘Rudy’ on their team. The inaugural award was presented to Terry Clayton of the University of Kentucky. A senior linebacker, Clayton lost his hearing at the age of five. He persevered as a walk on for the Kentucky football team and twice was named to the Southeast Conference Academic Honor Roll.

In 2008 the number of nominees more than doubled to 53, resulting in outstanding nominations including finalists Drew Combs (winner, pictured above), Dan Cafaro, and Nik Harris who was recently drafted by the Buffalo Bills.

Nominees will be chosen by our national selection committee consisting of such esteemed sports figures as June Junes and Chuck Knox (the Selection Committee). The selection process also incorporates a fan vote for supporters of the College Football Rudy Award (read the Awards Process FAQ).

Geez, I just read the fine print at the bottom of the page:

Online fan voting is limited to one vote per day. Fan voting carries the weight of one Selection Committee member. Results will be posted on December 14, 2010.

Will have to try to remember to vote every day, then! :confused0082:

We've bumped Gary up by another 1% to 3% of the vote. But, Nebraska & Texas A&M, are voting heavy. This might be the biggest award of the season for the Gators! We need everyone to pass this on.
