Gators move up to #12 in AP and Coaches' Top 25

The Gators run away victory over the Wildcats Saturday in Lexington was good enough for a three spot jump in both the AP and the USA TODAY Coaches' Top 25 poll released Sunday. The Gators move up to No. 12 in both polls, up from No. 15 a week ago.

Next Saturday's Florida opponent, the Alabama Crimson Tide, are ranked No. 2 in the Coaches' Poll and No. 3 in the AP Poll. Oklahoma holds on to the top spot in the Coaches' poll but is supplanted by the LSU Tigers in the AP Poll.

Glad to see LSU grab the top spot. They deserve it. Tough schedule and they have been pretty dominant.

I have a worse feeling about the Tide than LSU--I rate the likelihood of beating either about the same only because we go on the road against the Bengal Tigers--a place almost as tough to win in as the Swamp, at ANY time.
The rankings, while of course irresistible to the glance, are still somewhat contrived at this point, teams rising and falling for completely unrelated reasons: some are set up to fall, others are just set up: ie. so a "strong matchup" is emphasized, for the sake of hyping it.
As the #12 team, we presumably aren't expected to beat either the #1 OR #3 teams. If we lose to both, we'll be right OUT of the polls, even if we play well and play them close. If we lose the first but win the 2nd on the road, will we be back up to where we are now? What about if those outcomes are reversed, is that return to #12 or better more likely? And what if we WIN both, unlikely as that may be? Will WE be Number 1? Would the surprise of it work for us or against us in the polls?
So much subjectivity and "apples and oranges" comparisons going on, it's fortunate that none of it makes too much difference yet...and remember, a 1-loss SEC East team COULD get another shot at a team from the West that beats us now later in Atlanta. So we glance at the ranking, yeah, but can't worry about it too much: just gotta find a way to win most if not ALL of our games, and keep the focus on getting better.

I actually don't think we will fall out of the polls if we lose both. We might hold on to a spot at 23 through 25. But I don't even want to think about that!
