The long wait is almost over, the Gators football season is just a month away and practice will begin this Saturday.
The team will "report" on Friday officially, though many players obviously are already on campus.
The first official practice is Saturday. The first full day in pads is Wednesday Aug. 10.
It's not hard to predict from coach Will Muschamp's comments that he wants a physical, hard hitting, tough football team. And you can't have a physical football team if you don't practice hard. Practing hard, means players hitting each other at full speed, and that leads to injuries. Injuries are something the Gators cannot afford to have, especially on the line of scrimmage.
This year's practice will be closed to the fans and media, but reports will come out, and Muschamp, the coaches and players will be meeting with the reporters as well.
It will be interesting to hear candid answers about how the new offense is coming together, and what level of physicality is present at each practice.
Muschamp is a cliche and illustrations guy, which actually can be entertaining.
At the SEC Media days he said this about guys working hard: "You can’t have union guys. Those are the guys who make a great play and then take the next play off because they think they are in a union."
Believe it or not that comment was rebuked for a University of Florida professor who did not feel that unions should be portrayed in a negative light. Faculty Union president John Biro told the Gainesville Sun:
"Obviously he’s been watching too much TV and all the union-bashing going on."
-St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, formerly of Oklahoma University, (who the Gators defeated in the 2009 BCS title game) spent two days with Charlie Weis going over offensive philosophy during the NFL lockout.
According to Sports Illustrated Bradford sought out Weis, because the Rams' new offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, spent time with Weis' learning offense on the New England Patriots Super Bowl teams.
-Athlon Sports has ranked its version of the Top 40 players in the SEC. No. 1 is South Carolina WR Alshon Jeffery, followed by another Gamecock, RB Marcus Lattimore. The Gators get no love on the list, defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd comes in at No. 39, which many Gator fans will find amusing.
-Among the many recruits the Gators are targeting for the 2012 class is a 6"0 wideout by the name of Stefon Diggs out of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, Maryland.
Diggs happens to be the No. 1 rated wideout for the 2012 class and was on campus recently for Friday Night Lights and by all accounts put on a show.
A.K.A the next Percy Harvin has Florida high the list and would be a major piece in Muschamp and Co.'s first recruiting class.
Diggs is said to be choosing between the Gators and Maryland with Miami, Auburn and Virginia Tech in the mix. He is not expected to make his decision until later in the fall and only recently cut his list of schools down to 15, thought the above mentioned schools are thought to be the favorites.
