Kenny Carter

GAINESVILLE --
A Southeastern Conference Eastern Division rival raided Florida's football staff for a running backs coach in January. The Gators did the same thing on Wednesday.

Florida hired Vanderbilt assistant Kenny Carter on Wednesday to be the Gators' running backs coach. Carter replaces Stan Drayton, who left Florida for a similar position at the University of Tennessee.

Carter was unavailable for comment Wednesday but his wife, Bonnie, said the family was currently making plans to move to Gainesville.

Carter adds a wealth of experience to the Gators' staff. He coached receivers at Penn State (2001-2003) before joining Vanderbilt's staff as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach (2004-2007). Prior to his stint at College Station, Pa., Carter coached running backs at Pittsburgh (2000) and outside linebackers at LSU (1999).

A 1990 graduate of The Citadel, Carter coached at his alma mater from 1994-1996. He was an assistant at Furman in 1993, the year Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson was named the Paladins' head coach.
Carter is the second assistant coach to join the Gators' coaching staff in less than a week. Former University of South Florida assistant Dan McCarney, a defensive line coach, joined the Gators' staff over the weekend. McCarney replaced former Florida assistant Greg Mattison, who was hired by the Baltimore Ravens.

Florida is yet to name a replacement for assistant coach Doc Holliday, who accepted a position at West Virginia in January. Holliday coached safeties at Florida and recruited Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
